Once the Turkey is eaten, the drinks bottles emptied and the kids are starting to get bored, the week after Christmas can feel like an anti-climax until the New Year celebrations begin. One idea to beat the post-Christmas blues is to hire a car and explore somewhere you may not have been before.
This somewhere doesn’t have to involve getting on a plane or ferry into Europe, there are plenty of places to explore without leaving our shores including the following…
The Cairngorms, Scotland
If you crave the open road, peace and quiet and spectacular countryside, there are few places in the UK that can compete with Scotland’s National Parks. The Cairngorms is one of the best kept secrets because it offers a combination of everything you might expect from a ski holiday abroad and hotels offering excellent family entertainment. The park itself covers 4,500 sq km so you will need to do plenty of driving to see it all but watch out for the weather, which is changeable and can be quite severe.
Eastbourne, East Sussex
If the last thing you want is to be freezing up in Scotland in the winter, then why not consider a trip down to the East Sussex coast, which offers the best chance of catching some sun. Eastbourne hasn’t become a mecca for retired people for nothing. It holds the record for the most hours of sun recorded in one month. There are now plenty of chic contemporary places to stay and January and February are the months where you may get some special offers on hotel stays.
Gwynedd, North Wales
The windy roads and mountains of North Wales attract tourists from all over the country year round. Besides the rugged mountains of the Snowdonia National Park there are the many charming and picturesque villages to visit such as Portmeirion.
